In the next of our Meet The Maker Series we meet Charlotte Ryan, owner of Carry Stuff Bristol. Carry Stuff Bristol create a range of eco bags and gifts, which are a must have for the approaching festive season and beyond!

Hi Charlotte! You have some fantastic creations, what inspires you?

I have a keen interest in typography and design. I also like words and messages that make me smile in some way. I create products that are useful and environmentally friendly.

What do you feel makes your work unique?

All my designs are printed on fair trade products. The messages seek to motivate, inspire or make you laugh. I spend time choosing fonts that suit a certain message, for example, you will see quirky fonts on products that have humorous or light-hearted messages.

Is being based in Bristol important to your work?

Definitely! I was born in Bristol and although I have lived elsewhere (university in Bournemouth, work in London and some travelling around the world!), I have always ended up back in good old Brizzle! You will see some Brizzle references within some of my products.

If you were to give one of your products as a gift, what would it be and why?

It depends who I was giving the gift to. If it was someone from Bristol then definitely the Brizzle tote that includes Bristol phrases, my friends love this one!

What is the best thing about being a local business?

From my experience, local businesses really take pride in what they do and they do their best to offer a good service to their customers. Local businesses also support each other.

What products from other makers on The Bristol Shop do you like?

I love the work of Elsie Belle Jewellery. I also love the range of Bristol art that features in The Bristol Shop.

What has been your greatest success as an independent business?

Producing a range that I’m proud of and that people have responded really positively to. I was also really thrilled to be approached by The Bristol Shop and have my work sitting alongside other fantastic local artists and designers.

What aspect of your work do you particularly love?

I love coming up with new designs and finding nice fonts. I’m obsessed with what I’m going to print on a bag/product next! I keep a little notepad with me to jot down any ideas that pop into my head or anything that inspires me.
